Literature Text

I hesitated, because I knew how it feels to have the loss of unborn babies. Durrah, however, was brave enough to fly out swiftly without a warning. She flew near Nagaina and acted as if her wing was broken.
I was utterly puzzled. Is it right to kill an enemy's babies? Rikki's gait was as fast as lightning as he left for Nagaina's eggs. I fluffed up my chest to gain back the courage. It is for the Garden. I continued my victory song to both annoy Nagaina and to support Durrah. I sang it loud and clear. Suddenly, a playful young voice rang from the house's direction. I quit singing, Durrah quit acting and Nagaina quit attacking. Then she raced for the bungalow. Worried, Durrah flew off to warn Rikki.
When she flew back, she was more worried than ever. "What if Nagaina uses the humans to kill Rikki-tikki-tavi? There will be no hope for us!" she cried. I shook my head. Oh, how I hate seeing her so gloomy. "We have to remind each other to never lose hope." I told her before I once again sang the happy song. Durrah was calmer then.
At that moment, Nagaina came slithering with an egg in her mouth as she was being chased by the red-eyed cat, Rikki. "Go," I told Durrah, but with the same idea, she had already flown down. She flapped her green wings around Nagaina to slow her down. Rikki caught up and began a series of quick movements of pouncing and biting. They were so swift, I could not keep up with what they were doing to each other.
Unexpectedly, the cobra dived in its hole, where it lived, with Rikki on her tail. It became hushed quiet as me and Durrah's eyes were glued to the hole, waiting anxiously for one of them to come out. After what seemed hours, I gave up. "The brave Rikki the cat is dead." I sadly started another song, except this was slower with grief. "Darzee! Like you said, we have to remind each other to never lose hope." spoke Durrah quietly. I ducked my head and thought. There still is hope, I repeated to myself. My spirits rose a bit. Taking a breath, I locked my eyes with the hole. I resumed my song, but a little more softer and quieter. Come out, Rikki! I thought rapidly, holding my breath.
Suddenly, I saw a glimpse of movement in the hole. Durrah and I exchanged an uneasy glance. Out came the victorious cat, Rikki! Durrah jumped and chirped happily and I let out a thankful sigh. Rikki must have been very tired, for when he crawled out, he went straight to sleep. I watch the brave cat for hours. "See? We should never give up!" Durrah gleefully sang for the first time. Her singing voice was very beautiful.
Rikki later awoke and told me to tell the Coppersmith of the news of Nagaina's death. Once I told him, the town crier spread the news everywhere with his shrieks. "Ding-dong-tock! Nag and Nagaina are dead! Ding-dong-tock!" That set the entire Garden with cheers of all kinds of different animals. When I returned to the nest, I also heard a cry of squeaks. I fluttered in to see if it was true—and it was. Three little fragile chicks had their eyes closed tight and beaks wide open.  The broken egg shells lay in a corner as Durrah smiled ever so sweetly at me. I felt so joyous; I became speechless. "Don't just stand around gawking, get some food!" Durrah laughed. With one more look at my babies, I flew out once again. Nightfall had already arrived, and so had three elegant lives. Just in time to see the Glow Lights.
